Leading PE in a Spanish School with support from FST

“The First Step remote learning course was just as good as doing it in person. The content was invaluable, delivered well and properly supported by a really helpful tutor, who got back to me quickly whenever I had questions. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend First Step to overseas teachers who want to develop their skills. Since completing the course, I’ve gone on to lead PE lessons for multiple age groups.”

The Client

Amanda Willett is a Teaching Assistant working in Spain. After moving there with her family, she took up a role at one of the country’s leading international schools, the Kings College British School of Murcia.
As part of her role, Amanda supports a broad range of learning, working with primary school classes from reception up to key stage two. Amanda wanted to get more involved with teaching PE, and was looking for a way to develop her skills in line with the latest, best practice.
The Kings College British School of Murcia delivers the British National Curriculum to the expat community around Murcia – supporting pupils from 18 months old, right the way through to A Levels.

The Challenge

Amanda really enjoyed the PE lessons, but wanted to develop her skills and knowledge. The school was really supportive of her goal, and helped her look for an appropriate course.
Amanda needed something that would help her to deliver PE lessons in line with the UK curriculum, and began looking at industry approved courses in the UK. She decided to undertake a Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport – a great starting point for anyone looking to develop their career in primary school PE.
Amanda looked into a range of different courses from providers across the UK. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them required her travelling back and forth to complete the practical observation part of the assessment.
With commitments, a job and family in Spain, it simply wasn’t feasible to travel back and forth…

The Solution

Amanda needed a fully remote course, and the school recommended she take a look at First Step Training.
After getting in touch, Amanda realised it was exactly what she’d been looking for – a completely remote training course, leading to a fully accredited qualification. The six-month course was delivered entirely online to fit into Amanda’s schedule and work life, with full support from an experienced First Step tutor.
For the practical aspect of the course, Amanda simply had to video her efforts and submit them online for assessment, with no need to travel to the UK!

Into the Future

Amanda successfully completed the course in 2018, and today, has the confidence, skills and knowledge required to deliver a varied, engaging primary school PE programme. It’s made a big difference to her career, and she’s now taken the lead teaching primary school PE for the reception and nursery classes at the school.
Amanda is also supporting other staff members with the delivery of PE lessons for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classes.
