The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications.

Delivered by an award-winning training organisation, this qualification aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to be able to plan, deliver and supervise safe and effective exercise programmes within a gym or health club environment.

To complete the qualification learners will:

  • Develop their knowledge of gym instructing though engaging online learning materials.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of gym instructing by completing an online portfolio.
  • Be assessed on their ability to:
    • Deliver a small group induction (minimum of 3 clients).
    • Carry out a health, medical and lifestyle consultation with a client (10 minutes).
    • Plan, deliver & review a gym instructing session with a client (45-60 minutes).

course content

During the qualification learners will cover:

  • Anatomy, physiology and nutrition and how they relate to exercise and fitness.
  • Health and safety in the fitness environment.
  • The skills to conduct client and group inductions in a gym-based environment and support exercise adherence and a healthy lifestyle.
  • The skills to plan, instruct and supervise safe and effective exercise and physical activity sessions.
  • Professionalism for fitness instructing.
  • Personal and professional development.
  • Delivering exceptional customer service.

course pre-requisites

Prior to registration learners are required to:

  • be at least 16 years of age
  • be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing).
  • Some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights, is highly recommended.
  • The course requires physical exertion, and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary.

NB. 16–18-year-olds may need to be supervised in the workplace once they have achieved the qualification.

WHY STUDY?

This qualification prepares learners for employment within a health and fitness environment. 

This qualification may lead to paid or voluntary roles include gym instructor, delivering gym inductions and designing health related gym programmes. This could be in a variety of settings including gyms, health clubs and leisure centres.
