FSSG Ready and Raring for Wimbledon

At FSSG HQ, we can’t wait to see what one of the most prestigious Grand Slams, Wimbledon, has in store for us! This week saw Wimbledon 2022 open for its first round of play, as the tournament celebrates 100 years since the mechanical marvel that is Centre Court, opened its roof.

A mixture of seeded players and wild cards will go head-to-head in this grass-court Grand Slam. One of the four major tennis tournaments in the world, it plays host to some of the best talents in the game. Many of them started playing as children like Emma Raducanu who was exposed to a range of activities before specialising in tennis.

Professional tennis players are amongst the greatest athletes in the world. Top players will spend at least 4 hours per day on the court perfecting their game. They even have additional strength and conditioning sessions incorporating speed, agility, and weights. Yet no player at the top of their game would be without a skilled professional coach.

Whilst former champion Serena Williams has made the headlines as she announces her return to the Championship. The favourite to win the Women’s singles is 21-year-old- Iga Swiatek. With an unbeaten run of 35 matches, she has rocketed into the limelight, with not her first but her second French Open title.

Some familiar names crop up as the top-seeded players for Wimbledon 2022. Tennis veterans, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are amongst the favourites for the men’s single title. Yet there may be cause for an upset as with Nadal’s win-loss ratio at 30-3 and Djokovic’s win at the Italian Open this year, it’s Carlos Alcaraz’s defeat of both these legends, that has the pundits talking.

We’ll be looking out for a British Northern Powerhouse too! A 26-year-old Liverpudlian Sarah Grey who came back from 3-5 down in just over 2 hours to put Australian Olivia Gadecki out of the tournament. Keep a look out for ‘Gutsy Grey’ as she makes a bid for the Wimbledon plate following heart surgery earlier this year.
