The Active Lives Adult Survey was released last month, showing great improvement in the activity levels amongst adults. 29.1 million adults are now taking part in more than 150 minutes of activity per week, with the number of inactive adults taking part in less than 30 minutes of activity having reduced to 11.9 million people.
Adults are showing more consistent levels of activity compared with the period during COVID-19. According to ukactive, gyms, pools and leisure facilities have driven this recovery, with fitness levels up by 2.3%, gym sessions up by 2.8%, and swimming up by 3.9%.
However, Sport England has admitted the survey may not be universally applicable. As inequalities across the country widen, fewer young adults between 16-34 are consistently active, with minorities and the socially deprived showing lower levels of activity. In less affluent levels, activity levels have fallen by 3.1% below pre-pandemic levels.
CEO of ukactive Huw Edwards added:
“Fitness and leisure facilities are essential for the health of these communities and while the Government has committed to £63m of funding to prevent further closures of pools and leisure centres due to high energy costs, a long-term strategy is critical.”
